I came across an interesting exhibit that was shown at the New York's Whitney Museum in the late 1970s. This exhibit was unlike any other before. It was bodybuilders flexing on a revolving platform in front of thousands of spectators.
This was a new concept that suggested the idea that bodybuilders were much like sculptors in the way that that "constructed" there bodies. Even more interesting, Arnold Schwarzenegger was a "piece" in this "exhibit". The author of a book called Pumping Iron, which was eventually made into a movie by the same name, was quoted as saying:
"The body itself is an art medium: malleable, capable of being aesthetically dominated and formed the way clay is by a potter."

This is very interesting, I never thought about how an artist could make art out of himself, but its a really cool concept to consider.
ReplyDeleteThis seems like an nice concept in theory that the human body could be art. However I'm not sure if bodybuilders have to much choice in how they look. I think they just try to get the biggest muscles they can and then get the lowest level of body fat right before competition. In my opinion they all look very similar. There is a limited range of what they can do, like if a painter was given a canvas but only red paint. The human body can definitely be artistic, but I'm not sure if I would consider body building art. I would be a lot more inclined to think of a hairstylist or tattoo artist before a body builder.
